Custom Duty
Importation duty is payable on all imported goods to the TRNC. People who are retiring to Northern Cyprus may have their importation duty waived for used household effects; with the exception of electrical items, duty may still be levied on certain types of electrical items.
It is also possible that you will need to present at the time of importation of your household goods in order for you to verify your retired status to the Customs Authorities.
It can be far easier and is advisable, that when your goods are being shipped you employ a local agent who will help with documentation and customs. One reason in particular is that all manifests must be translated into Turkish and this can be done by the local agent whom you employ.
Water Supply in North Cyprus The TRNC
Northern Cyprus is no different to any country with a hot climate, water is precious. When in Northern Cyprus you may experience times the mains supply of water; the level of restriction depends on decisions made by the local Councils.
Most properties built are supplied with a 3 ton water tank and there is always the option of installing another tank should you require a larger storage capacity.
It is unadvisable to drink tap or well water that has not been analyzed.
Last year and again this year many local areas will experience some shortages of water. This shortage brings about problems when watering gardens or filling pools. The rule to follow is that water supplied to you by the local councils must not to be used for such purposes. Any water required for your garden or swimming pool should be purchased from a local water supply company. Water purchased in this is delivered by tanker. Please be aware that should you use Council water for your either your garden or pool you do face the risk of receiving a fine and in some cases having your supply removed.

Location of Northern Cyprus
Cyprus is the most easterly of all the Mediterranean Islands. The nearest costal point to Cyprus is Turkey which is approx 40 miles, the next being Syria which is approx 60 miles and then approx 250 miles is Egypt.
North Cyprus Weather
The Cyprus Climate as you might expect is typically Mediterranean with long summers, very short winters & somewhere in between the Cyprus spring and autumn. Spring and autumns in Cyprus are mild, warm and pleasant. During Nov to March you should expect Cyprus to have a moderate amount of rain. This being said we are now at the end of Nov and the temps for the past 2 weeks have stayed around 70F 20C with not a drop of rain to be found.
Getting to North Cyprus
The easiest way to travel to Northern Cyprus is to fly to Ercan with either Turkish Airlines or CTA Cyprus Turkish Airlines. Flying with Cyprus Turkish Airlines you will arrive at Ercan Airport after making an approx 1 hour stop over in one of the Turkish Airports, the complete journey is approx 6 hours total. When stopping at Turkey there is no need to disembark as generally you stay on board for the stopover period and then continue with your journey to North Cyprus.
For those who are traveling from or wish to stop over in Turkey this is possible and you can continue your journey to North Cyprus by one of the scheduled flights. Dependent on the airport that you fly from the journey from Turkey takes 60-90 mins.
Scheduled ferryboats travel from Girne (Kyrenia) and Gazi Magusa (Famaugsta) to Turkey whose south coast ports are Mersin, Alanya and Tasucu. You can take passenger ferries and car ferries but the car ferryboats will be slower than the passenger ferries.
North Cyprus Money
The Currency used in Northern Cyprus is the New Turkish Lira, YTL. Most currency is acceptable and many major credit cards and happily accepted in larger stores, hotels and banks. The value (exchange rate) for Turkish Lira can change from day to day and so it is a good idea to keep check of up to date exchange rates before changing money.
Unless you can guarantee a good exchange rate before you depart for North Cyprus It is a good idea for you to wait until your arrival in Northern Cyprus before you exchange money.

Most Banks in Northern Cyprus are open Mon - Friday between 08.00 - 12.00 and again 14.00 - 16.00. If you prefer not to carry large amounts of money on you, travellers cheques are exchangable in Banks and Exchange Bureaus and many Hotels

Cars in North Cyprus
There are many car showrooms in Northern Cyprus so you will find a good choice of options from new and used cars. Unleaded petrol or diesel is available. You will also find in North Cyprus servicing agents for a wide variety of cars though dependent upon the make you may find a problem locating spare parts.
Should you wish to take your car out of the country even for for a holiday in Turkey you will need to obtain an export certificate and upon your return you will have to re-import the vehicle. For this there will be a small fee charged.

All locally registered cars are liable and must pay Road Tax. Road Tax in Northern Cyprus is paid annually. MOT all cars over three years old have to have a MOT test.
Your British driving license will be recognized in the TRNC for a limited period, as are International Driving Licenses. Please Note that You will need to obtain a TRNC Driving license if you intend to own a car in the TRNC for a longer period than 3 months, once the 3 month period has lapsed if you do not have a TRNC Driving License your insurance will not be valid.
North Cyprus Television Radio and Newspapers
Broadcasting daily in Turkish, English and Greek, BRT (Bayrak) North Cyprus' radio and television station broadcasts from Nicosia. The content of BRT’s programmes is a mixture of current affairs, news, music, movies and documentaries.
You can purchase several English language newspapers, namely the weekly Cyprus Today & daily Cyprus Times.
A range of major European daily newspapers and magazines are available and can be purchased at most supermarkets /general stores though these will be a little more expensive than you might expect to pay in the UK.

Dialing the TRNC from the U.K. dial 0090 (392) for main line numbers.
When calling mobile phones 0090 (533) or 0090 (542) followed by the number you require.
Telephone billing and faults reports dial 163. To receive the recorded message in English dial 9.
Mobile phones in Northern Cyprus
You have two options with Northern Cyprus Mobile Phones, either on contract or a pay-as-you-go Sim Card which can be purchased in many supermarkets, small shops and Kiosks.
If you intend to stay in North Cyprus for a reasonable length of time or even require to make constant use of your phone it could beneficial to you to buy a local Sim card which will allow you use your phone locally as well as overseas. If you find that the gsm provider from whom you purchased your phone has locked the phone you will not be able to swap Sim cards until the phone has been unlocked.
Internet E-mail services are widely available in Northern Cyprus and there are many Internet Cafés in all major built up areas of North Cyprus. Should you be staying in North Cyprus for long periods of time, broadband is now readily available.

Refuse Collection
You can expect household rubbish to be collected once or twice a week, this will vary and is dependent on your local Council for the majority household rubbish is collected from individual homes in some cases it will be collected from a local pick-up point and on these occasions facilities will be supplied where you can deposit refuse. The refuse collection service is be paid for annually to your local Council Office in TRNC, North Cyprus.
If your property is in an isolated area it could be that the responsibility to dispose of refuse falls upon the homeowner.
Electricity Supply
In North Cyprus the Standard British rectangular 3-pinned plug is used which are 5 and 13 amps, though on occasion some 2-pinned plugs are used. For this reason it is advisable that you purchase an adaptor.
Anti-mosquito machines are continental 2-pinned plugs, so this is one occasion when an adaptor is required. You don't need to purchase these before you depart for Northern Cyprus as these are easy to find in North Cyprus. Although not as often as in past years, power cuts do still, but have become less frequent of late. Many households have invested in the purchase of their own generators.
Warning do make sure you pay your Electricity bill on time, leave it unpaid too long and you face the chance of being cut off then to get your electric supply returned you are likely to receive a fine. Should it be your intention to leave your property unoccupied for a period of time, make sure you set up some kind of arrangement to have the bills paid.
